Newborn photography is one of the most specialized and beautiful types of photo sessions in my eyes. You’ve gone through so much to bring this beautiful baby into the world, and before you know it, they’ll be walking and talking, so newborn photos capture the magical yet fleeting first weeks of your baby’s life. But many of my clients are investing in newborn photography for the first time, and they have questions. To help you know what to expect, I’m answering some of the top newborn photography questions.

What If My Baby Doesn’t Sleep for Their Newborn Photo Session?

Every parent loves those sweet, sleepy newborn photos, so it’s natural to worry about whether your baby will drift off to dreamland when you want them to. Ultimately, a baby will do what they do, but I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve and nearly all babies spend plenty of time asleep during their session. Even if your baby wants to stay awake and join the party, don’t worry! I’ll still be able to make your portraits beautiful and special.

What Do I Do During My Baby’s Newborn Photo Session?

Newborn photo shoots can take several hours because it can take time to soothe babies and get them into the specific poses and sets we want. But what exactly do you do during this time? That’s the best part: you get to relax!

Being a parent to a newborn is exhausting to say the least, so I’ve designed my sessions to be as easy and relaxing for you as possible. While I may need to call on you every so often for feeding or soothing your baby, you’ll generally be able to relax in my studio and read a book, catch up on emails, or even take a nap.

Can I Choose the Poses and Looks for My Baby’s Newborn Photos?

As a boutique photographer, I set aside time to work with you directly to plan your baby’s session. We’ll talk about the aesthetic you want, the color schemes you love, your favorite baby poses, and more, and I’ll design the session around those details.

With that said, it’s ultimately your baby who will decide what poses we can and cannot capture. Your child’s safety is my top priority, and it’s safest not to try to force a baby into poses that aren’t comfortable for them. I’ll do everything I can to capture the images of your dreams and I can promise you that your images will be stunning regardless, but for your baby’s safety, I can’t promise any specific poses.
